Find reasons to be optimistic (Issue 22)

Online Magazine gives us 48 real life examples to remain optimistic about the future.  2020 was a hell of a year. We started 2021 with doubt that it was going to be any better. Well, when you put things into perspective - we have many reasons to move forward with good intentions and positive aspirations for the future. Here are 4 of my favorites...

  • The Cubicle's Reign is over. Prior to the pandemic, some people had the luxury of working form home while most companies did not think it could work. We now know the answer and more workaholics have a freedom they have never experienced before.
  • The Planets Best Destinations got a much needed rest. Lack of commuting and polluting helped places like New York City, Venice, China, and Dubai witnessed cleaner air and water.
  • Outdoor and Alternative Education are Thriving. A complete educational shut down forced us to find alternative ways to teach, learn, and communicate though outdoor spaces and Zoom.
  • Finding new adventures. We were forced to find new ways to get out of the house, exercise, travel, and play. Many of these new habits have stuck and we're better off for it.

Make before you manage (Issue 40)

I recently came across this great advice from Tim Ferris. This is something he learned from a busy life of managing many projects and putting out fires. I can often relate when I am busy and overwhelmed. I find myself spending the day "managing and chasing".

From Tim:

Make before you manage.

Each morning, before plugging holes, fixing things, calling vets, answering text messages, delegating things, or yanking out dead raccoons, this mantra was a reminder to make something.

Even the most time-sensitive items can usually wait 60 minutes, and by make something, I mean anything.

You just need to feel like you’ve pushed a millimeter ahead in some creative direction.

Eat more fiber (Issue 40)

Ensuring that your diet is rounded out with enough fiber is the key to being slimmer, stronger and generally healthier.

Benefits of more fiber: Weight loss, reduced chances of cancer (and other health risks), better bathroom breaks, and a healthy gut.

Foods to get more fiber: almonds, beans, broccoli, raspberries, sweet potatoes, apples, avocados, oatmeal.

Foods to eat daily (Issue 39)

We all know we need to make healthy eating a  habit. Adding Certain foods and drinks deliver outsized benefits when included in your daily diet. Try inculding these on a daily basis:

  1. Coffee
  2. Green tea
  3. Honey
  4. Oat bran
  5. Blueberries
  6. Walnuts
  7. Leafy Green
  8. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  9. Turmeric
  10. Dark Chocolate
  11. Beet Juice

6 ways to reduce the chances of chronic disease (Issue 38)

According to Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a cardiologist and double-cancer survivor at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., here are 6 ways to reduce chances of chronic diseases and "Live younger Longer".

  1. Eat a Mediterranean Diet
  2. Do HIIT workouts (instead of the gym)
  3. Get 8 hours of sleep every night
  4. Control your stress
  5. Don’t Smoke & drink less alcohol
  6. Control your weight (by doing the previous 5 steps)

Stop doing these things if you want to live to 100 (Issue 36)

You have more control over your longevity than you might think. The impact of poor life choices can take decades to manifest and happen so gradually that they are hardly noticed but can be hard to reverse later in life. To give yourself the best chance at 100, stop doing these things:

1. Stop Poisoning Yourself
2. Get Off Your Butt And Move
3. Don’t Let Your Brain Get Soggy
4. Stop Compromising On Sleep
5. Manage Your (Chronic) Stress
6. Don’t Be Too Busy To Socialize
